Access to the Arts

Our newest CVS Caremark All Kids Can partner is VSA arts, a national nonprofit dedicated to helping people with disabilities learn through, participate in and enjoy the arts. Because the CVS Caremark All Kids Can program is dedicated to ensuring that children have the skills and support necessary for success in life, learning through the arts can be a powerful method of building confidence and success in the classroom. The arts also provide a vehicle for expression and communication. In 2007, CVS Caremark worked on three projects in Washington D.C., Boston and New York City, encouraging youth to express themselves through their original artwork and then making it possible for their artwork to be displayed at local museums, festivals and CVS/pharmacy stores. The partnership also gave our colleagues the chance to volunteer and participate in community-based programs in the arts. VSA arts programming and initiatives are guided by four essential principles:

  • Every young person with a disability deserves access to high-quality arts learning experiences.
  • All artists in schools and art educators should be prepared to include students with disabilities in their instruction.
  • All children, youth and adults with disabilities should have complete access to cultural facilities and activities.
  • All individuals with disabilities who aspire to careers in the arts should have the opportunity to develop appropriate skills.
