Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) is a devastating disorder in which there is progressive degeneration of motor nerves in the brain and spinal cord leading to paralysis and death, typically within three to five years. Thousands of individuals die of ALS each year in the United States. At this time, there is no treatment for this disease.
The ALS Therapy Alliance was formed by a group of New England scientists and clinicians who wished to interact and collaborate to study ALS. Today, the ALS Therapy Alliance has expanded its reach to scientists and clinicians worldwide.
Since 2002, CVS Caremark's retail division CVS/pharmacy has supported the mission of the ALS Therapy Alliance through a store-wide fundraising campaign that takes place in CVS/pharmacy locations. Together, CVS Caremark and its customers have raised more than $10 million dollars to support the ALS Therapy Alliance in its research efforts.
With the support of CVS Caremark, the ALS Therapy Alliance has played a central role in these and many otehr important projects.
It is the conviction of the ALS Therapy Alliance that the support of CVS Caremark has already led to novel, ground-breaking initiatives in ALS research and that these initiatives will contribute directly to the development of new approaches to treating ALS.
